My “unscientific” way of writing emails (that sell)

Some would call me "reckless" others would call me "insane" ... but this is how I write my emails

There’s a common piece of copywriting wisdom floating around on the interwebs.

Everyone seems to parrot it out these days.

It goes as follows:

Start with the end in mind.

In essence, it means that – instead of just going ham with the writing – you should think about what you’re selling first and what will get people to act.

It’s not bad advice.

But I write my emails differently.

I have an approach that most email marketers would call “completely reckless and insane”.

Let me explain how I do it.

I take that saying “start with the end in mind” … and flip it completely on its head.

My process goes as follows:

  • I scroll the interwebs for inspiration

  • I see some idea I either like or disagree with (usually the latter)

  • I think of a subject line (yes – I write my subject lines first)

  • I frantically jump up and open a Google Doc to churn out an email

I “make things up on the go”.

This is NOT how you were “taught” to write emails.

You were taught to always start with a clear idea & a specific purpose in mind.

This does work – of course.

But I think this way of emailing is DYING.

Let me explain why.

So, because I’m writing my emails while I’m STILL in the state I was in when I thought of the idea…

…you get a LIVE window into my current state.

I’m writing with the same ENERGY.

And, in my opinion…

Content is nothing but Energy Transfer.

I’m shifting your emotional state, by simply capturing my own emotional state.

Now, this might sound a little bit woo-woo.

But think about it… you don’t consume your favorite creator’s content just to get some cool “frameworks” and “hacks” … you consume their content also because it’s THEM.

They are the reason you click. Not only their advice.

A common objection I get to this is this:

“But Tim, this doesn’t lead to sales!! And I really wanna make some sales. :(((”

And if you just thought that… you still don’t get my philosophy about email marketing.

Because—

The ONLY way to have a profitable email list long-term is to build an intimate connection with it.

Sure…

A well-crafted and thought-out sales email will probably get more sales in the short run (and there is a time and place for those).

But as I’ve told you many times before:

Short-term sales don’t matter as much as a long-term connection with your list.

Any of my emails might not make any sales on the day I publish… but it’s the consistent act of ingraining my beliefs into my reader’s minds that gets people to buy later on.

And what better way to build a connection than to give your readers a “window” into your current emotional state?

(That’s why I think the “stab & jab” model of email copywriting is dead. Smart entrepreneurs don’t want email marketers just writing one email or one campaign. They want someone to build an engaged list that buys over & over again).

And this is exactly how I do it for my clients.

I build them a list that LIKES and TRUSTS them. 2 hidden currencies much more important than any measurable metric.

And to do that…

I need to capture my client’s ENERGY.

It might sound weird… but before most client writing sessions, I do a visualization that puts me into the minds of my clients.

(I told you it sounds weird.)

But this “unscientific” trick allows me to capture my client’s energy in the best way possible.

And let me repeat it once again:

CONTENT IS NOTHING BUT ENERGY TRANSFER

So… I want you to take away 2 things from this email:

  • Focus on a long-term relationship with your list (I promise, this will make you so much more money than milking it out right now)

  • Write your content when you’re in a positive emotional state so your readers will feel the same (making them more likely to come back for more)

Bonus takeaway #3:

  • Outsource all this to me by replying with “Ghost” ;P (I still have one more spot open for my DFY program this month).

(The not-so-subtle pitch at the end).

Talk to you soon,

Tim <3

P.S. I want to make these emails even more valuable for you.
