The bonehead mistake that cost me MONTHS (and how you can avoid it)
Bonehead
The other day I hopped on a call with Dan West (@danwestworld).
It was a market research call for him. Meaning: he asks me a bunch of Q’s and I’m supposed to reveal my deepest, most heartfelt problems and desires. And so I did. It was actually quite fun.
But there was one question Dan asked that stood out to me.
The question was:
What’s the biggest mistake
you’re currently making?
Talk about being put on the spot.
At first, it was tricky to put my finger on it. I stumbled a bit and had a second think. And then… I found it. My final answer was – dare I say – utterly GENIUS. (Gosh, I’m so freaking clever!)
Okay, maybe not genius-level clever… but it was eye-opening nonetheless.
My answer?
“I’m approaching my education the wrong way.
Instead of researching and finding solutions to the specific problem at hand… I consume too much general information that simply overwhelms me… but won’t help me jump over the obstacle right in front of me.”
In the past year alone I’ve invested over $7,000 in my copywriting education.
I bought courses, mentorships, workshops, books, communities, and anything I could get my hands on.
I don’t regret it.
In fact, it’s already led to a huge ROI.
But looking back, I think I could have done it much faster, more effectively, and for less.
See, I love courses and books. But there’s usually one downside to them:
They are very
broad and general.
Which is an amazing starting point for when you’re just diving into a topic… but it’s not ideal for the very specific and highly unique problems you’re facing in your day-to-day business life.
What type of lead magnet should I create?
How do I set up this SaaS business’s social media funnel?
What type of content should we lean into? Which awareness level do we target?
No course or book can give you the correct answer for your individual situation.
They can only give you hints and steer you in the right direction.
Sure, mentorships have helped.
But if you’re like me, you don’t want to spam your mentor with 300+ Telegram messages about all the little micro-problems that invariably come up throughout the day.
So what’s left to do?
Well, only the most obvious, brain-dead, and SMARTEST thing anyone could ever do…
Googling for an answer. 🤯
Huge revelation, I know.
But for some reason, I was always looking for answers in the wrong places. I thought I needed another book or course… when in reality… I needed a 20-minute Google search.
So…
Thanks to Dan’s brilliant question, I changed my approach to personal education.
I now pick one very specific problem I’m facing at the moment … I hop onto YouTube … search for an answer … watch a 15-minute video … implement … and BAM! Problem solved.
Whereas before, I’d let the tiniest problem hold me back for DAYS.
Specificity is the solution.
This practice has – I would estimate – DOUBLED my speed of execution!
And as you know… speed of execution is EVERYTHING.
Look, this might sound like common sense to you. But mate… for some (inexplicable) reason, this was a huge revelation for me.
Yes, I'll admit…
I’m a little boneheaded at times.
I guess everyone has their Achilles heel. Maybe someone can relate and needed to hear this today.
Don't let a lack of knowledge hold you back. If need be, furiously Google for an answer. It's always out there.
Let me know about your experience with this by replying to this email.
(Btw. Check out Dan West on Twitter, he’s genuinely a top lad (‘lad’ cuz he’s British) and super knowledgeable).
Talk soon,
Tim <3
P.S. STOP! You thought I wouldn’t try to sell you something in this email? WRONG!
If you're a SaaS founder in desperate need of a reliable stream of quality leads… I’m here to help.
Look, I've found that one key thing separates flourishing SaaS businesses from those that eventually fail:
Demand Generation
While most founders sit on their hands and expect to “just get customers” because their product is good…
The real industry leaders take matters into their own hands.
They build a strong brand presence on social media, which EDUCATES potential buyers on why they are the best option in the marketplace.
This allows them to tap into a pool of entirely NEW customers no one else has access to.
And that's exactly what I do for my clients.
I build their organic presence on social media to attract them a reliable stream of inbound leads – without them lifting a finger.
If you want the full details of how I do this… reply with “DFY” and I’ll send them over.
