The answer to "the client question"
Between swinging my racquet on the tennis court … hitting PRs in the gym … and studying for university…
…I've been doing a bit of thinking:
“How can I make these emails interesting to you?”
Which is why, last week, I sent out an email asking for things YOU were interested in right now.
(Btw, still feel free to let me know by replying to this email)
Perhaps unsurprisingly…
The topic that came up most was “How to sign clients?”.
Pranav asks a more specific question:
2 things [I have questions about]:
- Getting list of prospects to reach out
- Turning them into Clients
I just started outreach a week ago so I'm facing some initial struggles.
I thought this was a great question. But…
I’m NOT going to
answer it… directly. 😉
Instead…
I want to give you a bit of a unique spin on this.
Because what you need likely isn't “better lead scraping methods” or “a DM conversion script”. What you really need? Something I don't see many people talk about.
But in this email, I’m going to do just that.
Before we get started…
We can talk about getting clients on 4 “levels”:
Operational – doing the thing (ex: sending an outreach DM)
Tactical – HOW things should be done (ex: outreach script)
Strategical – WHAT things should be done (ex: outreach channel analysis)
Philosophical – mindset and beliefs
People love to talk about levels 1-3.
That’s nice.
But it’s gonna be USELESS unless you’ve DIALLED level 4: the mindsets, beliefs, and attitudes you have about getting (and handling) clients.
Your philosophy is the FOUNDATION of the strategy, tactics, and operations.
Fragile foundation → hard time getting clients
Here’s the tricky part:
Operations and tactics are what you spend 99% of your time doing. You don’t spend 4 hours per day thinking about your beliefs about how you want to run your business, do you?
Most copywriters don’t think about this AT ALL. They assume that the thing that consumes the most time is the most important.
This is FALSE.
Lots of time spent doing something doesn’t make it valuable. Period.
Does doomscrolling Instagram for 5 hours make it a valuable activity? Hell fucking no.
So… repeat after me:
My client-getting PHILOSOPHY is more important than any operation, tactic, or strategy in the world.
Next, let’s talk about what philosophy you SHOULD have.
The answer is surprisingly simple:
You MUST have an
abundance mindset.
You must quench your neediness.
Careful: this doesn’t mean you don’t WANT to get clients. It means…
Rejecting bad clients.
Being okay with being rejected.
Thinking “am I going to like this client?” … instead of “is this client going to like me?”
It means
being powerful
How many clients you’ll attract is inversely correlated with how needy you are. Let that sink in.
This is how you attract more AND better clients.
Non-neediness attracts non-needy businesses – businesses that are happily willing to pay A LOT of money.
Here’s the secret:
Think of yourself as abundant. Be the person who doesn't NEED clients. Be the person who prioritizes themselves over short-term income.
(Note that this has NOTHING to do with being entitled or treating clients badly. This is about respecting yourself AND your clients – even if you’re a desperate beginner.)
This is probably not the answer you wanted to hear to “the client question”.
But it’s the answer you NEEDED to hear.
Thanks for reading, reply with your thoughts and more questions. (I loooove getting questions from you 😋)
