My spicy opinion on most copywriting "tactics"

Not your average take

Today, I’m going to share with you one of my SPICIEST opinions on copywriting that I don’t see many people talk about.

To illustrate the point, let’s do a little role-play.

Let’s pretend that…

You are a beginner copywriter who
doesn’t know ANYTHING about copy (yet).

And now, let’s pretend that you want to get better at copywriting.

What would you do?

Well, if you’re like me you’d search on YouTube “how to be a copywriter”.

You click the first video.

And one of the first things this “guru” talks about is…

Your headline!

You can’t make sales without grabbing their attention first.

So far so good.

But what happens next has ALWAYS rubbed me the wrong way.

They give you a bunch of generic headline templates.

And the VERY FIRST ONE you see?

Want to [achieve dream outcome]?

Or even worse…

Do you struggle with X?

😑😑😑

Not only are these super BORING…

They also miss the single most important factor when it comes to making sales.

THE RELATIONSHIP

Generic questions like this just SCREAM “I’m here to sell you something.”

This is a HUGE turn-off and achieves the exact opposite of what you want.

And look…

This is not so much about these headlines in particular…

This is more about using generic,
templated copywriting tactics.

Because especially when you’re trying to attract high-level business owners… you shouldn’t expect them to be morons who’ve never even heard the word marketing before.

Chances are…

They know a little bit about marketing themselves.

And if you use cheap questions/templates like this… they’ll see right through you and lose trust.

So the lesson is this:

Instead of being a brain-dead idiot who uses basic copywriting tactics like “do you struggle to X?” … become creative and think for yourself.

Sure, you can use these as rules of thumb.

But rules are meant to be broken.

What you MUST focus on more than “tactics” is making people trust you. Aka building a relationship.

Anyways… this is something that I’m seeing many beginner copywriters do that is most definitely harming their business.

The worst part?

They don’t even know about it.

Hopefully, this opened your eyes to the fact that critical thinking is SO much more important for writing great copy than any “tactic” ever was.

Cheers & talk soon,

Tim <3
