Is your business built on shaky ground?
Painful truth: You’re probably building your business on shaky ground.
Let me explain.
When I started my business, I initially thought I did so because of “freedom.”
But eventually… I unlocked that freedom.
I made more money than I’d dreamed of, moved to Thailand for a month, and worked for only 2 hours per day.
The full-on freedom package.
But still? It wasn’t enough.
Then I thought it’s all about “mastery” and becoming the best version of myself.
But deep down I knew … I was lying to myself.
So I dug deeper.
And then, I uncovered the REAL, unfiltered, and painful truth of why I started:
I started my business was so I could look competent, impress others, and make up for my insecurities.
I built my business because of insecurity.
At first, I didn’t want to admit this.
But I couldn’t delude myself any longer.
I worked not because I WANTED to … but because I felt obligated to. And that… is a shaky foundation.
See, insecurity might be great to get you started.
But it can’t fuel you sustainably (unless you’re okay with being miserable for the rest of your life).
Once I realized this… I made drastic changes.
I stopped posting on X
I “fired” some of my biggest clients because they drained me
I said “no” to huge deals because they didn’t feel aligned
The result? I was back to square one.
Except… I wasn't.
I still had my skills, my reputation, but unlike before … I wasn’t confined by insecurity, guilt, and fear anymore.
And so, I quickly rebuilt my business from the ground up.
This time?
With clients I enjoy serving, services I enjoy providing. Aka: a solid foundation from which I can build an empire.
Truthfully…
This was the most challenging transformation I've ever gone through.
More difficult than signing my first client or any other surface-level business success.
Piercing through the guilt, the painful self-examination, seeing my income drop week by week… it’s painful.
But it was necessary.
If I hadn’t done this, I’d probably have burned out … resented my business … and stayed stuck in a vicious and miserable cycle.
So my question for you today is:
Why are you REALLY building your business?
Be honest.
I know it’s sexy to say “freedom” or “to provide.” All those things might be part of it. But I’ve found that many of us use these to avoid facing their real source of motivation: insecurity.
Having the courage to acknowledge this could well save you from years of building an unfulfilling business.
