I wrote this email in 15 minutes

15 minutes on the clock

I’m pressed for time.

So let’s run an experiment:

I will write this email – start to finish – in less than 15 minutes. (I’ve only corrected grammar and typos.)

So … what’s the big idea?

Hmm…

Oh yeah, I know.

I’ll write about how to become a better copywriter.

Ladieees and gentlemennn…

Here are 3 counterintuitive ways to practice your copywriting skills:

1. Sell a consultation call

I wrote my first ever piece of copy for a 60-minute X growth consultation call.

Hey, I ain’t proud of it … but that’s how I got started.

The best way to practice copywriting is to actually sell something and get feedback from the market.

So think:

What are you good at? What could you help people with?

Perhaps you’re into fitness.

Great. Sell a 1-hour fitness consultation for 25 bucks.

Write a Google Doc landing page for it, go on Twitter, write some posts promoting it … and BAM.

You likely won’t make any sales.

But that’s not the point. The point is to write copy for a real product and get actual feedback from actual people.

Onwards.

(Time’s ticking – 9 minutes left.)

2. Handcopy great wri—

That’s boring. Everyone knows this one already.

So here’s a little twist:

Go out on the streets or scroll the interwebs. Look for advertisements. And identify things you’d improve.

Now … rewrite the ad.

Apply all the knowledge you’ve acquired through reading all those copywriting books (yep … I see you there).

I’ll admit, this requires some thinking. It’s difficult. You’ll burn some brain calories doing this. But the brain doesn’t learn unless you either experience intense pleasure or pain.

So push through the pain of thinking and learn.

5:45 min left.

3. AHHHH! I can’t think of anything 😭

Oh actually, here’s something:

Whenever you write copy … think of 3 random words (or let ChatGPT give them to you) … and think of ANY way to let these random words guide your copy.

Let’s say you’re writing copy for a personal finance book.

Now suppose ChatGPT has given you the words: 1. Butterfly 2. Merchandise 3. Cutlery

Think.

How can these words help you write better copy.

(This forces your brain to use lateral thinking – to become creative).

An obvious way to integrate “butterfly” into finance would be something like:

“Remember when you used to live life carefree as a butterfly. You’d do whatever you felt like doing. You were young … optimistic … and happy. Now? You’re burdened by financial pressures … a draining 9-5 … and responsibilities. My new book “Make Yourself Free” will make you feel like a butterfly again.”

(Just an example)

Remember…

All these are just ways to practice.

You don’t need to do this when you’re actually writing copy.

Lastly – before my timer runs out – I want to give you access to the most important lesson I’ve ever learned about copywriting. If you miss this, you might forever go unnoticed as a copywriter.

And that lesson is:

You must NEVER
EVER un—

Ooops.

My timer ran out.

That ladies and gentlemen … was my 15 minute email.
