You’re back in your childhood bedroom. 

The same room where you slept almost every night for the past 7 years.

You look around. The lights are completely off. Only the shining beam of a small flashlight is illuminating the room.

To your right, you see your alarm clock showing ‘ Sunday 3 AM.’ Over to your left… a silhouette of a sleeping child. About 8 years old. 

It’s your friend.

Your buddy that you’d always invite over to those crazy sleepovers.

Wait! Maybe this is one of them? 

Your suspicions are confirmed when your friend gently whispers: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

Before you even have time to think about this question… 

You’re RIPPED back into the present.

You’re still in the same room.

You look over to your right… and the alarm clock still shows ‘Sunday 3 AM.’ But it’s not the good ol’ days anymore. It’s 2023. And instead of whispering to your friend (afraid of waking up your parents) …

AGAINST YOUR DESK!!

“F**K THIS! This is definitely NOT what I wanted to do as an adult.” you squeeze out through pursed lips.

You look up on your screen just to feel even more hopeless.

“Is this what running a business is supposed to feel like? Am I doing this right? Am I wasting my time?!? … Maybe I should go sleep now …” Frustrated, you turn off your computer and sink into bed… knowing full well that you’ll have to face this exact situation again tomorrow. And the day after that. And so on.

This, my dear reader, was me exactly 1 year ago.

Last year, around this time, I ran a web design agency. And it was actually making decent money – not a ton, but enough to survive.

The problem?

I was slaving away sending cold emails every minute of my waking day.

Sometimes I’d even sacrifice my precious sleep!

I thought I was committing some heroic act, by staying up late to work on my business.

The result?

I was too burnt out to deliver results for my existing clients which made them ask for refunds, putting me in a VICIOUS cycle of chasing after new clients… burning myself out (even more)… and losing out on even more revenue.

This CRUSHED my confidence.

And it was part of the reason why I shut that agency down.

Instead of the purposeful “freedom business” I dreamed of having as a teenager… I’d created a prison for myself. I even considered giving up on this entrepreneurship thing altogether.

If only I had known that there was a much better and easier way to actually build a business that YOU run, instead of it running you… I probably would have stuck to it (and made a fortune doing that).

But I gave up.

(I don’t regret anything btw. I like this writing thing much better anyway – but I did end up hating myself for a solid few weeks.)
