Build In Public Update #312: Making my business FUN

Let's have some fun

Here’s something uncomfortable I realized:

I’m spending a non-insignificant amount of workday doing things I… let’s just say… f*cking despise.

So I’ve had a little think:

How can I make
my business more fun?

Because look… if your business ain’t – in at least some way – enjoyable to you… the chances of you sticking to it for years and decades and working hard are extremely slim.

So here’s my power plan for making my biz a little more fun.

Step 1: Reverse engineer my dream business

See, most entrepreneurs go about building their business completely backward (in my opinion).

They just build.

Without a second thought about what they’re really building.

Don’t get me wrong… that’s better than not doing anything at all, but it puts you at risk of building a business that you secretly loathe. One that keeps you in shackles, very much opposite of the “freedom business” you dreamed of.

So let’s not end up in that situation.

Here’s what I asked myself:

How do I want my P&L
every month to look like?

(P&L meaning Profit and Loss Statement btw)

What products/services do I want to focus on long-term? How much of my rev would each one contribute to? How much money would I even want to make in the first place?

Here’s my answer:

I want my profit to be split 50/50 between digital products and my DFY services. (Perhaps I’d still like 2-3 coaching clients but no more than that.)

Ahaaa!

So there’s the first takeaway: I need digital products to sell. And luckily, I happen to be working on some already (it just takes a whole lotta time and effort, so please be patient).

Step 2: Take inventory of the things I enjoy/hate

First question:

What do I enjoy doing most
in my business?

The answer was simple for me: writing these emails and blog posts. I just love it so much. It doesn’t even feel like work to me… it feels like I’m doing what I’ve been called to do. And that… is a GREAT feeling.

Moving on to the things I absolutely hate.

My list:

  • Warm outreach

  • Juggling DM convos

  • Engaging on X/LinkedIn

  • Accounting/documentation

  • Spending time on socials in general

Yeah, definitely not my favs.

Next up…

Step 3: How can I do more of the things I like and less of the things I dislike?

Let’s use some brainpower.

Because I enjoy writing emails so much, I thought: why not put more effort into getting more potential clients on my list and creating more offers to sell?

This would solve a BUNCH of problems: I wouldn’t have to rely on outbound anymore… I wouldn’t have to juggle DM convos (as more people could reach me via email)… I could spend more time doing the thing I love most… aaand I would build tons of leverage long-term.

Simple in theory. Hard in practice.

But this gave me a clue: I should focus more on list-building.

Step 4: Create an action plan

This is the part I haven’t really gotten to yet.

But one things is for sure: I need to improve the quality of my customer journey (or funnel if you wish) to get more people on my list.

Currently – I will admit – it’s not very thought-through.

I don’t have many systems in place for growing my list. But here are a couple of ideas:

  • Create a new lead magnet that’s more relevant to my target audience (SaaS founders)

  • Double down on my podcast to drive warmer traffic to my opt-in page

  • Give special rewards for anyone who promotes my list in relevant internet spaces (I’ll show you how soon)

  • Increase my authority by flaunting my wins more (I’m extremely bad at showing off, but I need to do it more)

  • Update my opt-in page to make it more appealing to SaaS founders/established coaches

  • Simply ASK for people to join my list more (duh)

These are just a couple of rough ideas I have. Maybe they can serve as inspiration for you. 🤷

Step 5: EXECUTE!!!

Ok chill. We’re getting ahead of ourselves.

Anyways, this email was longer than expected.

But maybe, just maybe, these insights into how I think about my business “back-to-front” – starting from the place I want to get to – is food for thought for you.

Remember: you’re not here to build another 9-5.

(more like 5-9)

You’re here to build something that grants you total freedom over what you want to do with your life. Something that you can be proud of… Something that impacts people’s lives in a positive way… Something that fills your wallet AND your heart.

Talk soon,

Tim <3

P.S. Perhaps you’ve realized throughout this email that you, yourself, are doing a lot of things that you don’t enjoy.

I’m here to help you with that.

One of the things I happen to enjoy most is (content) marketing.

Meaning: if you DON’T enjoy that we’d make a great team to grow your business stress-free and reliably.

I’ve helped a former client of mine sign 4 high-ticket deals in 40 days without putting in an ounce of extra effort.

We simply installed some specific systems… hammered out authority content… and watched the leads roll in.

In my DFY program I do exactly that for you – you don’t have to lift a finger.

If you’re currently doing too many things that you’d rather NOT do (like marketing)… and just wish you could get back to what you enjoy doing most (perhaps building your product)… reply with “DFY” to see how I can help.
