Raw and dirty
So recently I’ve been experimenting with my content strategy.
I tested all sorts of things.
And tbh most of them flopped…
But I made one veeery important discovery.
One type of content that not only got engagement but also got me inbound leads.
What am I talking about?
It's off-the-dome personality content.
(Especially with pictures of yourself)
I kind of knew that this style of content worked.
For a long time, however, I didn't post anything remotely close to that.
Instead, I spent hours writing up well structured and beautifully formatted long forms.
Compare that to this post you're reading now:
I’m using the notes app on my phone to hopefully somehow capture all these ideas that are flooding my mind.
No fancy formatting
Incoherent strings of thought
Wrong grammar & spelling (doing my best but this keyboard is small af)
But guess what?
This type of content has been working wonders for me.
The reason for that is most likely that people are slowly fed up with “perfect” posts.
This doesn't mean that they’re useless (not at all)...
It means that we should focus on other things first.
That thing is:
Authenticity
You see, in this post you learned more about me than in any of these fancy long forms I’ve carefully written up.
Just by reading my authentic writing you’ve formed a closer bond with me (not in a weird way tho haha).
Now why is that important?
People only buy from people they like and trust.
The classic, well-written and structured post might lead to trust…
But not to someone liking you.
The only way that can happen is if you're TRULY fucking authentic.
Here's a little challenge for you:
Leave your house.
Go to a nice place (like a cafe).
Whip out your phone (on airplane mode).
Start writing about your plans, goals, problems, etc.
Just let your thoughts flow.
Don't even worry about how it will sound to others.
Only then go back and edit it.
Not only is this fun af…
This also encourages you to take things a little less seriously.
Writing on my phone has been HUGE for me.
That feeling of informality carries over and allows me to be me.
Give it a try.
Another thing I want you to do is:
Talk more about yourself!
Dreams
Challenges
Accomplishments
This is a fucking personal brand after all.
You're not a value robot.
We have ChatGPT for that.
This will give the reader something to hold on to.
Something to like you for.
Because how the fuck will they ever like you if you never reveal anything about yourself?
But I get it…
All of this can be very uncomfortable in the beginning.
You don't want to come across in the wrong way.
You either fear being too vulnerable or too braggadocios.
If you have that fear you know that THIS is exactly what you need to write about.
Damn I've rambled on for a long time now…
All this to say:
Just be yourself in your content.
Break the conventions and stop taking things so seriously.
Now, I could be entirely wrong here…
Maybe people still crave nicely structured and carefully crafted posts.
Maybe I just got lucky with those personality posts.
Who tf knows?
But I highly encourage you to give this a try.
