Advice I gave to my 18 y/o brother
“What do you want to do after school?”
Yesterday, I overheard my dad asking my younger brother, Philipp, that same boring question he and his twin brother have been getting nonstop.
Philipp is 18 and about to graduate.
And like most kids his age, he has no idea what he wants to do.
“Hmm, I don’t know,” he mumbled, annoyed.
“How about studying Geography?” my dad suggested. “Or becoming a scientist? You’d make an excellent scientist.”
“Ugh. Maybe…”
I get Philipp.
I was in the same boat not too long ago.
Graduated top of my class and had a million options.
And that was the problem … too many choices.
I always knew I wanted to do my own thing, but… what? Should I start a business? Go to uni first? Which path was the path?
The way we force kids into these decisions at 18 is insane.
It’s like asking a 3-year-old what he wants to eat for the rest of his life and never letting him try anything else – “CHOCOLAAAATE!”
It’s stupid.
So here’s the advice I gave Philipp:
“Take your time.
You’re 18. You have nothing to stress about. Explore. Experience. Learn about yourself.
The worst mistake is letting others – dad, grandma, random relatives – pressure you into a decision you’re not ready for.
I ‘dicked around’ for two years – trying to build a business, traveling alone, ‘wasting time’… except I wasn’t.
Those two years were an investment.
Now? I know exactly what I want.
Meanwhile, so many of my friends jumped straight into uni, only to realize two years later that they hate it. But by then, they’re too deep in. And they stick with a career they don’t even like.
Imagine doing something for 40+ years just because you rushed a decision at 18. What a waste.”
I have no doubt that Philipp and David (his twin brother) will make the right decision.
But it’s scary.
Everything is uncertain.
If you too are finding yourself at a crossroads – maybe you’re considering quitting your job, changing your business model, moving away—
Pause.
Don’t let the world rush you into a decision you’ll regret.
Don’t let your family, friends, or worse, some random guru on the internet dictate how you live your life.
After all… it’s your life. Not theirs.
